Who Was Dean Martin?

Dean Martin was born Dino Paul Crocetti on June 7, 1917, in Steubenville, Ohio, to Italian immigrant parents.

Interestingly, Italian was his first language, and he reportedly didn’t begin speaking English fluently until he started attending school.

Before Hollywood fame arrived, Martin worked a variety of jobs and performed as a nightclub singer. His life changed dramatically after meeting comedian Jerry Lewis in the 1940s.

Together, they formed Martin and Lewis, one of America’s most successful comedy partnerships.

Their combination was simple but incredibly effective: Martin played the charming, handsome straight man while Lewis provided the wild physical comedy.

Martin and Lewis appeared together in numerous successful movies before ending their partnership in 1956.

Martin later conquered television with The Dean Martin Show, which ran from 1965 to 1974.

That effortless personality eventually earned him one of his most enduring nicknames:

Dean Martin died on December 25, 1995, at the age of 78, but his music, movies, and television appearances continue to attract new generations of fans.
