Onion Lemon Juice Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 small onion, preferably yellow or red
- 2 cups (480 ml) water
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1–2 teaspoons honey, optional
- 1 thin lemon slice, optional
Recipe
This simple homemade drink is made by gently simmering sliced onion in water, straining the liquid, and adding fresh lemon juice after it has cooled slightly. Honey can be added to soften the strong onion flavor.
How to Make It
- Prepare the onion. Peel one small onion and rinse it thoroughly. Cut it into thin rings or slices so that more of the onion is exposed to the water.
- Boil the water. Pour 2 cups of water into a small saucepan and bring it to a gentle boil.
- Add the onion. Place the sliced onion into the boiling water. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer gently for about 8–10 minutes.
- Let it steep. Turn off the heat, cover the saucepan, and leave the onion in the water for another 5 minutes.
- Strain. Place a fine-mesh strainer over a heat-safe glass or mug. Carefully pour the mixture through it and discard the cooked onion pieces.
- Add the lemon. Allow the onion water to cool until it is warm rather than piping hot. Stir in 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice.
- Sweeten if desired. Add 1–2 teaspoons of honey and stir until completely dissolved.
- Serve. Drink it warm, or refrigerate it and serve chilled. For the best flavor, prepare a fresh batch rather than keeping it for several days.
Note: Onion-lemon water is a homemade beverage, not a proven “Botox,” collagen treatment, detox, or anti-aging remedy. Lemon is acidic and may aggravate reflux or sensitive stomachs, so dilute it well and stop if it causes discomfort.
