How to Make Banana Cream Pie
1. Prepare the pie crust
Use a fully baked 9-inch pie crust and let it cool completely before adding the filling.
You can use a homemade crust or a ready-made crust.
2. Make the custard
Place a medium saucepan over low to medium heat.
Add:
- 3 cups milk
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 4 egg yolks
Whisk continuously until everything is smooth and well combined.
Keep cooking gently while stirring constantly.
After several minutes, the mixture will begin to thicken.
Once it becomes thick, silky, and custard-like, remove it from the heat.
Add the butter and vanilla extract.
Stir until the butter is completely melted and the custard looks glossy and smooth.
3. Add the bananas
Slice 3–4 bananas into even rounds.
Arrange a layer of banana slices across the bottom of the cooled pie crust.
You can add a second light layer if you want more banana flavor.
4. Add the custard
Pour the warm custard slowly over the banana slices.
Use a spatula to spread the filling evenly and smooth the top.
Make sure the bananas are mostly covered by the custard.
5. Chill the pie
Place the pie in the refrigerator for 3–4 hours, or until the custard is fully set.
For the cleanest slices, you can chill it overnight.
6. Make the whipped cream
Add the cold heavy cream to a mixing bowl.
Add the powdered sugar and vanilla.
Whip until medium-stiff peaks form.
The cream should be fluffy and stable, but not overwhipped.
7. Decorate
Spread or pipe the whipped cream over the chilled pie.
Decorate with fresh banana slices.
You can also add toasted coconut, cookie crumbs, or chopped nuts for extra texture.
8. Slice and serve
Use a sharp knife to cut the pie into triangular slices.
For the best presentation, wipe the knife clean between cuts.
The perfect slice should show:
golden crust → banana slices → thick vanilla custard → fluffy whipped cream.
Tips for the Best Banana Cream Pie
Use bananas that are ripe but still firm. Very soft bananas can become mushy inside the pie.
Stir the custard constantly while cooking so it stays smooth and does not scorch.
Do not add the whipped cream until the pie is fully chilled.
For a stronger banana flavor, add an extra layer of banana slices under the custard.
Storage
Keep the pie covered in the refrigerator and enjoy within 2–3 days.
Because it contains fresh banana and whipped cream, it should stay refrigerated.
