The Secret Behind the Splash: How One Audition Changed Everything
But did you know that his path to leading man status almost took a different turn? Back in the early 1980s, when this photo was taken during his breakout role in the TV sitcom “Bosom Buddies,” a young Tom Hanks auditioned for the romantic lead in Ron Howard’s upcoming film, Splash (1984). Interestingly, director Ron Howard initially envisioned him only for the comedic supporting role of the brother.
However, during the readings, Hanks’ raw, natural charisma and undeniably relatable boyish energy completely won Howard over. He was so utterly charmed that he immediately upgraded Hanks to the starring lead role opposite Daryl Hannah! This pivotal decision officially launched his historic film career, transforming him from a sitcom favorite into the A-list movie star we adore today. It’s incredible to think how one audition can change the trajectory of an entire career, making movie history!
