The Big Reveal: Who Was It?

A Secret from the Ponderosa Set!
But here’s a little secret that even the most dedicated Bonanza fans might not know! While “Little Joe” was his character’s name, actor Michael Landon, who stood at 5’9″, had a clever trick up his sleeve to appear more imposing alongside his much taller co-stars. He famously wore custom four-inch platform boots on set!
This helped him stand eye-to-eye with the towering 6’4″ Dan Blocker (Hoss) and 6’2″ Lorne Greene (Ben), ensuring he wasn’t physically overshadowed in those iconic family scenes. And those famous cowboy hats he often wore? Landon frequently used them to tame his naturally curly hair, which, much to the delight of fans, would often break free during those intense on-screen fistfights, only adding to his rugged, charming appeal. He truly became an iconic figure for millions!
