But wait, there’s more to this classic Western than meets the eye! One of the most iconic elements of Josh Randall’s character was his distinctive firearm: the legendary “Mare’s Leg.” This wasn’t just any prop; it was a custom-made, cut-down 1892 Winchester lever-action rifle, modified to the size of a large pistol and carried in a specialized quick-draw hip holster.

Steve McQueen’s iconic ‘Mare’s Leg’ was a true TV legend!

This unique weapon was almost too good to be true! Because modifying a rifle barrel under 16 inches was strictly illegal under federal firearms laws, producer Vincent M. Fennelly had to painstakingly work with prop designers and armorers to create a custom, legally compliant prop that maintained the distinctive look and feel of a shortened rifle, making the ‘Mare’s Leg’ a true star in its own right.
