The Answer Revealed: Who Played Gloria Stivic?
For those who joined our quiz, the question was: WHICH ACTRESS PLAYED GLORIA STIVIC ON ALL IN THE FAMILY IN 1971?
You had four options:
- A: Suzanne Somers
- B: Marlo Thomas
- C: Valerie Harper
- D: Sally Struthers
And the moment you’ve been waiting for… the correct answer is indeed D: Sally Struthers!
Sally Struthers originated and immortalized the character of Gloria Bunker Stivic, the sweet and sometimes fiery daughter of Archie and Edith Bunker, starting with the pilot episode of All in the Family in 1971. Her portrayal earned her two Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe, solidifying her place in television history.
The Secret That Almost Changed Everything!
Here’s the juicy, behind-the-scenes tidbit that will make you appreciate Sally Struthers’ iconic role even more. Just days before she landed the role of a lifetime as Gloria Stivic, Sally Struthers was at her wit’s end. She was completely broke, had just been fired from The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, and was packing her bags to abandon Hollywood forever and move back home to Oregon!
Unbeknownst to her, legendary producer Norman Lear had already shot two unsuccessful pilot versions of All in the Family with two different actresses playing Gloria, but neither quite captured the essence he was looking for. It was a true stroke of luck and perfect timing that Sally auditioned when she did. Her unique talent and undeniable chemistry with Carroll O’Connor and Jean Stapleton were exactly what the show needed, saving her from leaving the bright lights of Hollywood for good!
Can you imagine All in the Family without Sally Struthers as Gloria? It’s hard to picture, isn’t it? Her performance became an integral part of the show’s groundbreaking success and enduring legacy. This story is a fantastic reminder that sometimes, the biggest opportunities arrive when you least expect them, especially when you’re on the verge of giving up!
