Which Container Will Fill Up First?

At first glance, this water-flow puzzle looks much more complicated than it really is. There are several tanks, multiple pipes, and four possible containers labeled A, B, C, and D.

The challenge is simple:

Which container will receive the water first?

The correct answer is Container D. But why? Let’s follow the water carefully.

Step 1: Start at the Main Water Tank

The water begins in the large reservoir at the top of the puzzle. From there, we need to examine the outlets underneath the tank.

The biggest mistake people make with puzzles like this is assuming that every pipe is open. Some paths may look connected at first glance, but they do not necessarily provide a complete route to the containers below.

So instead of looking at the entire maze at once, we need to trace each route from the top down.

Step 2: Follow the Right-Hand Route

One of the important outlets from the main reservoir leads toward the right side of the puzzle.

Once the water enters this section, it travels through the upper-right chamber and continues downward through the connected passage.

This is the route that matters.

While the network appears to branch in several directions, following the actual openings shows that the water can continue toward the lower-right section of the system.

Step 3: What About Containers A and B?

The left side of the puzzle is designed to distract you.

There are several chambers and passages that appear to lead toward Containers A and B. However, when you trace the connections carefully, these routes do not provide the fastest complete path from the main water supply to an open outlet.

This is why simply choosing the container that appears closest to the top tank can give you the wrong answer.

Step 4: What About Container C?

Container C is another tempting choice because there is an outlet positioned near it.

But the key is not just looking at where the bottom pipes are located. You have to determine whether water from the original reservoir can actually travel through the entire network and reach that outlet.

Following the maze from the top shows that the decisive open route continues through the right-hand system instead.

Step 5: The Water Reaches D

Now follow that right-side route all the way down.

The water enters the connected chamber, continues through the lower passage, and eventually reaches the outlet positioned above Container D.

There is a continuous path from the water source to this outlet.

That makes D the winning container.
