His roles in Westerns like Quigley Down Under perfectly showcase his rugged appeal, while comedies like Three Men and a Baby reveal his versatile charm. He’s truly a legend who has left an indelible mark on both television and film.
The Indiana Jones Role That Almost Was!
Now for a secret that even some die-hard fans might not know! Did you know that Tom Selleck was originally chosen to play one of the most iconic action heroes of all time? That’s right! George Lucas and Steven Spielberg themselves hand-picked Selleck for the lead role of Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981).
Selleck even did a legendary screen test and accepted the part! However, fate had other plans. CBS refused to release him from his contract for the new TV series, Magnum, P.I., which was gearing up for production. So, the role ultimately went to Harrison Ford, who, of course, made it his own. The real kicker? A writers’ strike ironically delayed the filming of Magnum, P.I. by months, meaning Selleck would have actually had enough free time to shoot Raiders after all! But by then, the casting dice had already rolled.
