Believe it or not, Paramount studio executives initially hesitated to cast him, labeling him ‘box-office poison’! But Brando, never one to back down, had a trick up his sleeve.
During a spontaneous home screen test, the then 47-year-old actor transformed himself. He stuffed his cheeks with cotton balls to give his jawline that iconic, jowly look, smudged black shoe polish into his blonde hair to slick it back, rolled down his collar, and spoke in that haunting, raspy whisper we all know so well.
