The Secret History of a Hollywood Giant
But here’s where the story gets even more fascinating and reveals a truly incredible secret that sets Chuck Connors apart from almost every other Hollywood legend. Before he ever donned the hat and holstered the rifle, Connors achieved an extraordinary, once-in-a-generation athletic feat that very few Hollywood stars could ever match: he was a professional athlete in BOTH Major League Baseball (MLB) and the National Basketball Association (NBA)!
That’s right! Standing at an impressive 6 feet 6 inches, Connors initially played for the Boston Celtics in their inaugural 1946–1947 season. In a legendary pre-game warmup moment, he famously shattered the very first glass backboard in professional basketball history! Later, he transitioned to professional baseball, playing as a first baseman for the illustrious Brooklyn Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs. Imagine the dedication and talent required to excel at the highest level in two completely different major sports before becoming a beloved actor!
