Who Was Gerald Ford?
Gerald Rudolph Ford Jr. was born on July 14, 1913, in Omaha, Nebraska. Before entering politics, Ford studied at the University of Michigan, where he played college football, and later earned a law degree from Yale Law School.
During World War II, Ford served in the United States Navy. After the war, he began a long political career, eventually representing Michigan in the U.S. House of Representatives for about 25 years.

One of the most fascinating facts about Ford is that he became both Vice President and President without being elected to either office by a nationwide vote.
In 1973, President Richard Nixon nominated Ford to become vice president after Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned.
Then, on August 9, 1974, Nixon resigned amid the Watergate scandal. Ford consequently became the 38th President of the United States.
He served as president from 1974 to 1977.
A Controversial Presidential Decision
One of Ford’s most consequential decisions came shortly after taking office. In September 1974, he granted former President Richard Nixon a full and unconditional pardon for offenses Nixon might have committed against the United States while president.
The decision was extremely controversial at the time. Ford maintained that he wanted the country to move beyond the Watergate crisis, but the pardon became one of the defining events of his presidency.
Life After the Presidency
Ford ran for a full presidential term in 1976, but he narrowly lost the election to Democrat Jimmy Carter.
After leaving office, Ford remained active in public life for many years. In 2001, he and Jimmy Carter were jointly honored with the Profile in Courage Award.
Gerald Ford died on December 26, 2006, at the age of 93.
