Vaseline is best known as an occlusive moisturizer—it helps reduce moisture loss and can leave dry skin feeling softer and smoother. If you enjoy DIY skincare, here are four simple combinations inspired by the recipes above.
Important: These are DIY cosmetic ideas, not treatments for wrinkles, pigmentation, or acne. Lemon/lime, coffee, and spices can irritate facial skin. Patch test first, avoid the eye area and broken skin, and stop if you feel burning or irritation. Citrus on skin can also react with sunlight, so the gentler options below are preferable.
1. Vaseline + Clove Infusion 🌿
You’ll need:
- 1 teaspoon Vaseline
- 1–2 cloves
How to make it: Lightly crush the cloves and mix them with the Vaseline. Rather than leaving rough clove pieces in the mixture, let it sit briefly and remove the solids before applying.
Apply only a very small amount to a patch-tested area. Clove can be irritating, so this isn’t a good choice for sensitive or reactive skin.
2. Vaseline + Coffee ☕️
You’ll need:
- 1 teaspoon Vaseline
- A tiny pinch of very finely ground coffee
Mix until evenly combined. If using it on the body, massage very gently and rinse away the coffee particles rather than aggressively scrubbing.
The Vaseline helps seal in moisture and gives skin a temporary smooth, glossy appearance. Coffee should not be expected to erase wrinkles.
3. Vaseline + Turmeric ✨
You’ll need:
- 1 teaspoon Vaseline
- A very small pinch of cosmetic-grade turmeric
Mix thoroughly until the balm becomes pale golden. Apply a thin layer to a small patch-tested area for a short period, then gently remove it.
Use only a tiny amount because turmeric can temporarily stain both skin and clothing.
4. A Gentler Alternative to Vaseline + Lemon/Lime 🍋
Although DIY posts often recommend mixing citrus juice with Vaseline, fresh lemon or lime juice is not an ideal facial skincare ingredient. Its acidity can sting or irritate the skin, and citrus exposure combined with sunlight can cause problematic skin reactions.
For the “clear, dewy skin” version, keep it simple:
You’ll need:
- 1 teaspoon Vaseline
- Your usual fragrance-free moisturizer
Apply moisturizer first, then spread a very thin layer of Vaseline over dry areas to help lock in hydration overnight.
How to Use Vaseline Safely
For most people, the simplest method is also the most useful: cleanse the skin, apply your regular moisturizer while the skin is slightly damp, then use a rice-grain-sized amount of Vaseline as the final step on dry areas.
You don’t need a thick coat. And remember that the shiny “glass skin” appearance immediately after applying an occlusive product is mainly a hydrated surface finish, not evidence that wrinkles or dark spots have disappeared.
Patch test every DIY mixture first and read the precautions before use. ✨
