What You’ll Need

Ingredients:

  • Very hot water (enough to submerge your pillows)
  • 1 cup powdered laundry detergent
  • 1 cup powdered dishwasher detergent
  • 1/2 cup borax (or washing soda)
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar (optional, for rinse cycle)

Tools:

  • Large sink or bathtub
  • Rubber gloves
  • Measuring cups
  • Large spoon or stirring implement (or your gloved hands)

Why This DIY Can Be Useful

This powerful cleaning combination targets different types of stains effectively. The hot water helps to dissolve and activate the cleaning agents, penetrating deep into the pillow fibers. Powdered laundry detergent provides standard cleaning power, while powdered dishwasher detergent often contains oxygen-based bleaching agents that are excellent for whitening and breaking down stubborn yellow and brown stains. Borax (or washing soda) acts as a booster, softening water, aiding detergent performance, and further brightening fabrics. If used, white vinegar in the rinse cycle helps to neutralize odors and soften the fabric.

How to Make It

  1. Ensure your sink or bathtub is clean before you begin.
  2. Fill your chosen basin about halfway or enough to fully submerge your pillows with very hot water. Be cautious as the water will be hot.
  3. Add the 1 cup of powdered laundry detergent, 1 cup of powdered dishwasher detergent, and 1/2 cup of borax to the hot water.
  4. Stir the mixture thoroughly with a large spoon or your gloved hands until the powders are mostly dissolved. The water should look sudsy.

How to Use It

  1. Carefully submerge one or two pillows into the hot cleaning solution. Make sure they are fully saturated and submerged. You might need to gently push them down to release air.
  2. Let the pillows soak for at least 3-4 hours, or preferably overnight, for best results on heavily stained pillows.
  3. Periodically, you can agitate the pillows in the solution by gently squeezing them or pressing them down to help release more dirt.
  4. After soaking, carefully remove the pillows from the solution. The water will likely be quite discolored.
  5. Rinse the pillows thoroughly under running warm water, squeezing out the dirty water until the water runs clear.
  6. For an even deeper clean and rinse, you can then wash the pillows in your washing machine on a gentle cycle with a small amount of regular laundry detergent. If you’re using white vinegar, add 1/2 cup to the fabric softener dispenser for the rinse cycle.
  7. Dry the pillows completely in a dryer on a low heat setting, adding a few dryer balls or clean tennis balls to help fluff them up and ensure even drying. You may need to run the dryer cycle multiple times, flipping the pillows between cycles, until they are absolutely dry throughout.

What to Expect

You can expect your pillows to be significantly brighter, cleaner, and much fresher smelling. While this method can dramatically reduce or eliminate most yellow and brown stains, very old or deeply set-in stains might not disappear completely. However, your pillows will undoubtedly look much more appealing than before, extending their usable life and improving your sleep environment.

Helpful Tips

  • Check Care Labels: Always check your pillow’s care label before attempting any washing. Most synthetic and down alternative pillows are washable, but some specialty pillows (like memory foam) require different care.
  • Wash One or Two at a Time: Don’t overcrowd your sink or washing machine. Washing one or two pillows at a time ensures they get properly cleaned and rinsed.
  • Ensure Complete Drying: This is crucial! Any dampness left inside the pillow can lead to mold and mildew. If possible, air dry in the sun after machine drying for extra freshness and to ensure every last bit of moisture is gone.
  • Fluff Regularly: To maintain pillow shape and even distribution of filling, fluff your pillows daily.

Important Notes / Safety

  • Always wear rubber gloves when handling hot water and strong cleaning agents to protect your skin.
  • Ensure good ventilation in your bathroom or laundry area while soaking, especially when using powdered dishwasher detergent and borax.
  • Be careful with the hot water to avoid burns.
  • Do not overstuff your washing machine if you choose to machine wash after soaking, as this can unbalance the machine and prevent proper rinsing.
  • Crucially: Ensure pillows are completely, thoroughly dry before using or storing them to prevent mold and mildew growth. This can take several hours, even with a dryer.
