Looking for a fresh and simple green drink you can make at home? This cucumber, green apple, spinach, and lemon smoothie combines everyday ingredients into a refreshing drink that’s perfect for breakfast or as a light snack.
You may see drinks like this called a “detox smoothie,” but your liver and kidneys already handle your body’s detoxification processes. A better way to think about this recipe is as an easy way to enjoy fruit, vegetables, fluids, and nutrients in one glass.
🥒 Ingredients
For approximately 1–2 servings, you’ll need:
- 1/2 medium cucumber, sliced
- 1 green apple, cored and chopped
- 1–2 cups fresh spinach
- Juice of 1/2 lemon
- 3/4–1 cup cold water
- 4–6 ice cubes
Optional Additions
You can also add:
- 1/2 inch fresh ginger for extra flavor
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds for additional fiber
- A few fresh mint leaves
- 1/2 banana for a sweeter, creamier smoothie
- A little extra water if you prefer a thinner drink
🥤 How to Make It
Step 1: Prepare the Produce
Wash the cucumber, apple, spinach, and lemon thoroughly.
Core the apple and cut it into smaller chunks. Slice the cucumber so it’s easier for your blender to process.
You can leave the cucumber and apple skins on after washing them well.
Step 2: Add Everything to the Blender
Place the ingredients into your blender in this order:
- Cold water
- Lemon juice
- Cucumber
- Green apple
- Spinach
- Ice
Adding the liquid first usually helps the blender process the vegetables more easily.
Step 3: Blend
Blend on high for approximately 30–60 seconds, or until the mixture becomes smooth.
If it’s too thick, add a little more cold water and blend again.
Step 4: Taste and Adjust
Taste your smoothie before serving.
Want it brighter? Add a little more lemon.
Want it sweeter? Add some banana or another piece of apple.
Want more kick? Add a small piece of fresh ginger.
🌿 Why These Ingredients?
Cucumber
Cucumber has a high water content, making it a refreshing addition to smoothies. Its mild flavor also balances stronger ingredients such as spinach and lemon.
Green Apple
Green apple provides natural sweetness and a slightly tart flavor. Keeping the skin on also retains more of the fruit’s fiber.
Spinach
Spinach adds the characteristic green color and provides nutrients including folate, vitamin K, and carotenoids.
Its flavor is relatively mild when blended with fruit, making it an easy leafy green to use in smoothies.
Lemon
Fresh lemon juice adds acidity and a bright citrus flavor that complements cucumber and apple.
It also provides vitamin C.
Ginger — Optional
A small piece of ginger gives the drink a warmer, spicier flavor.
Start with a small amount because fresh ginger can quickly overpower the other ingredients.
💚 Smoothie or Juice?
For this recipe, I recommend blending rather than straining.
When you blend whole fruits and vegetables and keep the pulp, you retain much of their natural fiber.
If you strain everything and drink only the liquid, you’ll remove a significant portion of that fiber.
So don’t worry if your green drink isn’t perfectly clear—the pulp is part of the recipe.
⏰ When Should You Drink It?
There’s no special time required.
You can enjoy this smoothie:
- With breakfast
- As a mid-morning drink
- As an afternoon snack
- After spending time outdoors on a warm day
If you’re using it as a full breakfast, consider pairing it with a source of protein and healthy fat, such as eggs, Greek yogurt, nuts, or another balanced food.
🧊 Storage Tips
This smoothie tastes best freshly blended.
If you need to prepare it ahead of time, place it in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator and consume it relatively soon.
Separation is normal. Simply shake or stir before drinking.
