Vaseline, or petroleum jelly, is a simple occlusive moisturizer that helps reduce moisture loss and keeps skin feeling soft and protected. If you enjoy DIY beauty routines, you can pair a small amount with ingredients such as green tea, vitamin E, coffee, turmeric, or beetroot.
These recipes won’t literally reverse aging or erase wrinkles, but they can be used as simple moisturizing beauty treatments.
1. Green Tea + Vaseline
Green tea is commonly used in skincare because it contains antioxidant compounds. Combined with petroleum jelly, it makes a rich moisturizing treatment for dry-looking skin.
Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon Vaseline
- 1/2 teaspoon strongly brewed green tea, completely cooled
How to make it: Brew green tea and allow it to cool completely. Place the Vaseline in a clean bowl and add only a small amount of tea. Mix until reasonably combined.
How to use: Apply a very thin layer to clean, dry skin for about 10–15 minutes, then gently wipe away and rinse if desired. Because water-based tea and petroleum jelly do not form a stable preserved product, make a fresh portion each time rather than storing the mixture.
2. Vitamin E + Vaseline
This is the simplest combination of the five. Petroleum jelly helps seal moisture into the skin, while a small amount of vitamin E oil adds extra emollience.
Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon Vaseline
- 1–2 drops of cosmetic vitamin E oil
How to make it: Mix both ingredients in a clean bowl until smooth.
How to use: At night, apply a very thin layer to dry areas after your regular moisturizer. It can also be used on hands, elbows, knees, and other areas prone to dryness.
3. Coffee + Vaseline
Instead of leaving coarse coffee grounds on the face overnight, this combination is better suited to a short, gentle body treatment.
Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon Vaseline
- 1/4 teaspoon very finely ground coffee
How to make it: Mix the coffee into the Vaseline until evenly distributed.
How to use: Apply to damp hands, elbows, or other rough body areas and massage very gently for 20–30 seconds. Rinse and pat dry. Avoid aggressive scrubbing and avoid the eye area.
4. Turmeric + Vaseline
Turmeric gives this mixture its characteristic golden color and is popular in traditional DIY beauty routines.
Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon Vaseline
- A tiny pinch of turmeric powder
How to make it: Add only a very small pinch of turmeric to the Vaseline and mix thoroughly.
How to use: Apply a thin layer to a small area for around 5–10 minutes, then remove and cleanse thoroughly. Turmeric can temporarily stain skin, clothing, towels, and surfaces, so use very little.
5. Beetroot + Vaseline Lip Balm
For lips, beetroot can give petroleum jelly a temporary rosy tint while the petroleum jelly helps protect dry lips.
Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon Vaseline
- A tiny amount of beetroot powder
How to make it: Mix a small pinch of cosmetic/food-grade beetroot powder into the Vaseline until you get the desired pink shade.
How to use: Dab a small amount onto clean lips like a tinted balm. The color is temporary—it does not permanently turn lips pink.
Important Skin-Care Tips
Always patch-test DIY mixtures first and stop using them if you notice burning, itching, redness, or swelling. Use clean utensils, and don’t add fresh juice or other water-containing ingredients to a jar you plan to store, because homemade mixtures without proper preservatives can become contaminated.
For wrinkles and dark spots, daily broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen and evidence-based ingredients such as retinoids, vitamin C, azelaic acid, or niacinamide are more reliable options than DIY recipes.
