While his on-screen charm is undeniable, it’s a particular behind-the-scenes story that truly highlights Kevin Costner’s conviction and star power. Back in the late 1980s, when The Bodyguard was being cast, Hollywood executives were highly skeptical about featuring pop superstar Whitney Houston in her very first movie role. Studios had their doubts, but Costner, who was also producing the film, stood his ground.
He fiercely defended Houston against the studio’s reservations, even going as far as to delay the entire production for a whole year just so she could complete her music tour and take on the role of Rachel Marron. He personally promised Whitney that he wouldn’t let her fail, and even insisted on her iconic, natural hairstyle for the film, going against the popular trends of the time. His belief paid off in spades! The Bodyguard went on to become one of the highest-grossing romantic dramas ever, with its soundtrack becoming the best-selling of all time. It’s a powerful testament to Costner’s vision and faith in his co-star, creating an unforgettable cinematic moment and launching Whitney Houston’s incredible acting career.
