DIY Deep-Cleaning Soak for Dirty White Socks
White socks can quickly turn gray or dingy from sweat, dust, and everyday wear. If a regular wash isn’t enough, this simple DIY sock-cleaning soak uses common household ingredients to help loosen stubborn dirt before scrubbing and washing.
What You’ll Need
- A large basin
- Warm to hot water
- 2 tablespoons baking soda
- 1–2 tablespoons salt
- 1 tablespoon dish soap
- ½ cup white vinegar
- A soft laundry brush
- Dirty white socks
Step 1: Prepare the Cleaning Water
Fill a large basin with warm water. Use water that is comfortably hot but still safe for the fabric and your hands.
Add the baking soda and salt, then stir until they begin to dissolve.
Next, add a small amount of dish soap and gently mix it into the water.
Step 2: Add White Vinegar
Pour the white vinegar into the basin and stir gently.
You may notice some bubbling when vinegar comes into contact with baking soda. This is normal. Keep in mind that combining them also neutralizes much of their acidity and alkalinity, so for particularly stubborn stains, they can be more effective when used at separate stages.
Step 3: Soak the Dirty Socks
Place the dirty white socks completely into the cleaning solution.
Push them beneath the water so that the stained areas are fully saturated.
Let the socks soak for about 15 minutes. This gives the warm, soapy water time to loosen dirt trapped between the fabric fibers.
Step 4: Scrub Away the Dirt
After 15 minutes, remove one sock at a time.
Using a soft laundry brush, gently scrub the dirtiest areas, especially:
- The soles
- Heels
- Toes
- Any visible stains
Avoid brushing too aggressively, as this can damage or stretch the fabric.
Step 5: Rinse and Wash
Once the dirt has loosened, rinse the socks thoroughly with clean water until there is no remaining soap.
For the best result, wash the socks normally afterward according to their care label, then allow them to dry completely.
The result? Dingy-looking socks can look much cleaner, brighter, and fresher.
Extra Tips for Brighter White Socks
Always check the care label before using hot water because some fabrics can shrink or lose their shape. For heavily stained socks, repeat the treatment rather than using excessive scrubbing.
Also, avoid mixing this DIY solution with chlorine bleach or other household cleaners. Vinegar should never be combined with chlorine bleach because the mixture can release dangerous chlorine gas.
